Sesame
It is difficult to determine the exact origin of sesame. Nevertheless, it is attributed to a joint Indian and African origin. Sesame is a green leafy herbaceous plant that reaches 1 to 2 meters in height, with square, fluted and branched stems. This plant likes hot countries, from Mediterranean climates to tropical regions, especially in Asia, Africa, Central and South America as well as India, which is the world’s largest producer.
From Seed to Sesame Oil
The seeds are sown in the spring, and then the plant is mowed to the ground when the pods are mature but not yet open. The stems are shaken on to large sheets to collect the seeds, which are then winnowed to remove the film around them. A small proportion of the production is marketed as whole seeds or paste, while the rest, approximately 80%, is reserved for oil production. Between 3 and 4 kg of sesame seeds are required to produce 1 L of oil.
Guénard Sesame Oil
Our sesame oil, 100% virgin, is produced from seeds grown in Mexico: 10% of this oil is obtained after toasting the seeds and 90% by cold pressing. This mixture makes it possible to offer a unique oil with a perfect balance of taste.
